JSTOR is a scholarly peer reviewed database located on the library database page in the section, Journals, Magazines and Newspapers.
JSTOR is accessible off campus by typing in the same login and password you use for MyTMCC or Canvas.
For your assignment the instructor expects the majority of your resources to be Peer Reviewed, otherwise termed Scholarly resources.
Peer Review is the process by which a scholarly work (such as a paper or a research proposal) is checked by a group of experts in the same field to make sure it meets the necessary standards before it is published or accepted.
JSTOR searches default to including both available journal articles and book chapters. One can select one or the other to search by as well.
JSTOR also allows you to select specific date ranges for your search and one can sort the retrieved articles by relevance, newest or oldest. Relevancy is the default and serves the student best.
You may also further refine your search by academic subject area by placing a check mark in the appropriate box located on the left side of the screen. For example:
We can also narrow our search by using the Boolean connector AND. For example the search, step families yields 100,000 articles and book chapters. When we add, and United States the results are narrowed to 56,000 results. The retrieved results are presented by relevance.
One can further refine the above search by placing quotation marks around our search term, "step families." By refining the search with quotations the resulted are pared down to 356 results with a greater relevancy.
A second search example is Masculinity. The JSTOR database identifies 35,000 articles and book chapters.
We next add masculinity and United States and retrieve 16,000 results of which 450 are book chapters.
When we refine the search by date range to 2000 - 2019 the results are 10,000 resources of which 450 are book chapters.
By adding the term psychology, our results are narrowed to 5,500 titles.
Each article will provide you with an abstract on the left side of the web page and usually at the top of the PDF of the article.
Keywords will also appear on the left side of the page.
