Eng 102 - Cinderella in the World - Dr. Johnson-Olin: What Words to Use

Keywords

When you put together your search, you will have to select keywords in order to get results from the library databases.

You cannot ask the databases a question as you can Google.  Databases require you to use keywords or keyword phrases (two or more words that describe a concept such as "mental health," "social media," or "fairy tale/s.")

For this assignment do not simply search for "Cinderella."  This will get you results, but not the kinds of resources that you will need to write a developed paper.  Instead you need to search for the concepts that you are relating to the fairy tale of Cinderella.

Avoid searching for broad concepts such as "femininity" on its own.  You will get thousands of results and will need to make your search relevant to your assignment by adding additional keywords to your search.  For example, "femininity" and "representation."

If you are taking the male perspective, do not search for "Prince Charming" or simply "masculinity."

Instead try searching for words and phrases such as "dependency," "body image," or "passivity."  The phrases "Queen Bee"  and "princess culture" get you a number of interesting results.  Try adding context with words relating to race, class, gender or sexual identity, or culture.

Use the assignment, your readings, and your class discussions to generate possible keywords.

Try different combinations of keywords until you get a results to suits you.  You can then use this article or book to find others like it.  My search for "femininity" and "cross-dressing" resulted in an article that also was described with the phrase "gender identity."

It is possible to combine your keywords in such a way that you get zero results.  In this case you have to reverse your search until you get results and try different keyword combinations.
