President Franklin D. Roosevelt established the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), originally known as the Emergency Conservation Work program, in 1933 as a means to provide employment for young men in need. Another program known as the Works Progress Administration (WPA) was started in 1935, renamed the Work Projects Administration in 1939, provided additional employment opportunities. This also provided much-needed labor for various public works and conservation projects throughout the United States and its territories. The records of those who served in the CCC and the WPA are a rich source of genealogical data.
